Clinical Laboratory Technologist II- Cytogenetics
Permanent Position, 100%
The Clinical Laboratory Technologist II will report to the laboratory Supervisor. He/she works under minimal supervision and consistently and accurately performs.
Responsibilities
- Consistently and independently performs the more complex level of clinical tests by following department procedures
- Follows the laboratory's SOPs for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintains accurate and complete records of all testing performed on-site
- Proficient delivery of all applicable areas of Cytogenetic testing
- Sample preparation from bone marrow, blood or various biologic tissues
- Setup, culture, harvest, drop and banding of the cytogenetic cultures
- Scanning, microscope analysis and reporting (counting - analysis - reporting)
- Determines the acceptability of specimens for testing, prepares clinical specimens for testing and identifies specimen related problems according to established SOP guidelines
- Assist in or perform validation through documentation and development of procedural operations for new equipment, test or reagent lots following manufacturer's guidelines or established department SOP's
- Troubleshoot applicable instruments and procedures
- Performs newly introduced tests to the laboratory that require defined skills
- Participates in continuing education; present periodic in-service programs
- Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications
- Assists the department in ensuring an efficient workflow operation by reporting existing problems, i.e. issues concerning individual cases, tests, equipment and supplies that may cause significant delay on the workflow process to the department Supervisor or Director
Education & Qualification Requirements
- Education: CFC, Bachelor or Master's Degree in biology, biochemistry, medical analysis or equivalent
- Experience : At least 4 years of equivalent experience (high complexity testing) preferred
- Solid understanding of general laboratory techniques with relevant experience in cytogenetics techniques
- 3-5 years of Cytogenetics culture, harvest, dropping and banding experience
- Familiar with bench top dropping techniques
- Preferred experience with manual Oncology Cytogenetic analysis
- Validation experience of laboratory equipment and processes
- Knowledge of cell / molecular biology and immunology in cancer research preferred
- Proficient in written and spoken English. French is an advantage
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Must be able to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment and maintain production and quality standards
- Must be able to work in a biohazard environment and comply with safety policies and standards outlined in the Safety Manual
- It is required to cover shift on Saturdays and Sundays
